In Remembrance of Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller
On behalf of Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP), we extend our deepest condolences to the Cherokee Nation and the family of former Chief Wilma Mankiller. As we mourn this loss, we recognize her contributions of leadership, resilience, pride and love for Indian Country. Chief Mankiller was an inspiration for all people; particularly Native women as we challenge and support each other to live a life of legacy for future generations. Her humor and dedication fueled her passionate vision for her community and inspired many to learn from those examples creating change in their own communities.
NAP is honored to share these excerpts of Chief Mankiller's wisdom on leadership in Indian Country. These brief remarks illuminate her vision for leadership and encourage us to respond to leadership opportunities, each in our own way, and to honor the unique strengths that we each bring to serve our communities in honorable and visionary ways:
While we have a lost a visionary leader, we have gained more because of her time with us. In honor of Chief Mankiller's legacy and keeping her strong spirit alive, at her request any gifts in her honor should be made as donations to One Fire Development Corporation
