Native Americans in Philanthropy, Bush Foundation, Northwest Area Foundation and South Dakota Community Foundation present $300,000 in donations to Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Disaster victims in Eagle Butte, SD April 1, 2010

What: Representatives from Native Americans in Philanthropy, Bush Foundation, and Northwest Area Foundation of Minnesota, and South Dakota Community Foundations will present checks representing over $300,000 in donations from Native Americans in Philanthropy and South Dakota Community Foundation and its supporters. Most notably, Native Americans in Philanthropy supporters raised over $36,000 through GiveMN.org, $25,000 was donated by Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, $25,000 was matched by Bush Foundation, $10,000 was matched by Northwest Area Foundation, and Potlatch Fund donated another $2,500. Raising of funds to support the effort was promoted only through social networking and word-of-mouth, demonstrates the power and hope in sharing our resources.

On the ground at the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, power has been restored to 95 percent of homes, and the delivery of safe drinking water and propane fuel has mostly resumed. Residents who sought refuge off the reservation for safety or medical reasons have returned.  With the flu that affected many reservation families after the storm has abated, the reservation’s only health clinic has resumed providing dialysis and other medical services.

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Chairman Joseph Brings Plenty said, “The support that we’ve received and the amount of funds raised for the relief efforts here are overwhelming. We’ve received so much support out there, so many individuals coming together and basically giving their hearts.
