Common Vision
As part of its Common Vision initiative, Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues (FLGI)-in partnership with numerous, philanthropic groups-will convene grantmakers in two regions of the country-New England and the Midwest-to begin an in-depth conversation about philanthropy's potential for improving equity and building healthy communities in their respective regions.
"Our goal is to open up a unique space where grantmakers of all types can meet one another, share their expertise and discuss how philanthropy, at the state and regional level, can build communities that redress historical inequities based on sexuality, race, class and gender," said Luz Guerra, program director at Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues. Any grantmaker-at the local, regional, or national level-interested in supporting communities in the Midwest is invited to attend the meeting.
Sponsors are already signing up from the Midwest, including Arcus Foundation, Cream City Foundation, Donors Forum of Chicago, John Larsen Foundation, Minnesota Council of Foundations, Pfund (Philanthrofund Foundation), Council of Michigan Foundations, Chicago Foundation for Women and the Crossroads Fund.

The Native American and philanthropic communities of Minnesota existed together before organized philanthropy began. Since the early 1990s, Tribal philanthropy has increased significantly and Native professionals have joined as staff and board members of Minnesota foundations, but gaps still persist. This summit will look at a recent mapping and research report documenting the assets in Native communities and the resources available to strengthen them, as well as focus on solutions to the gap and to identify future actions and policies that can contribute to the quality of life of the Native American community in Minnesota.
